KIMDYMA: Born for the Soul of Cycling

The story began in Shanghai, yet its vision had long been set on distant horizons.

During Milan Design Week in 2020, founder Chen Qiming stood in front of the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, observing a contradiction in the flowing traffic: elegant European commuters preferred the effort of riding traditional bicycles over accepting bulky, aesthetically disruptive electric bikes.

“Europe is the birthplace of cycling culture, yet it remains on the fringe of electrification.” This insight ignited the first spark of KIMDYMA.

Chen Qiming did not stop there. He joined forces with Marco Rossi, a product experience designer and seasoned cycling enthusiast from Bologna, Italy, and Su Wei, a PhD in Sustainable Urban Transportation from Zhejiang University, forming a unique core team—the “Eurasian Iron Triangle.”

In a café in Milan, Marco shared his recorded observations across European cities: electric bikes jolting on ancient cobblestone streets, bulky frames clashing with classical landscapes, and the dismissive attitudes of young people toward existing products. “The issue isn’t technology, but arrogance. Most products fail to truly understand the dignity and lifestyle of European cycling,” he noted.

Su Wei pointed out the key: “This is fundamentally a problem of product philosophy. We need to find a delicate balance between commuting efficiency, riding dignity, the joy of exploration, and urban aesthetics.”

On a whiteboard, Chen Qiming drew an equilateral triangle, labeling its three vertices: “The Soul of European Cycling,” “The Depth of Chinese Manufacturing,” and “A Global Sustainable Future.”

“Therefore, what KIMDYMA aims to create,” he emphasized at their intersection, “is a new species. It must fundamentally respect European cycling culture and lifestyle aesthetics, carry the precision and efficiency of the Chinese supply chain in its blood, and embody the sustainable vision of global cities in its soul.”
